DescriptionJefferson Davis: Autograph Letter Signed on the "Armory" Question. Like other leaders of the Civil War, Jefferson Davis wrote a "definitive" history of the conflict and assisted other authors in setting the record straight. To paraphrase Richard Nixon, "history depends on who writes it," and there were no shortage of experts in the post-war period. In this ALS measuring 7" x 8.5", written to A. D. P. Nicholson on April 18, 1874, the former Confederate President writes concerning the Federal arsenals that fell under rebel control in early 1861. He forwards "... a manuscript which in temper and style... seems to me proper treat of the armory question... and answers the many errors which are in circulation... I think it will be another service rendered to truth and public good." Light toning, lacking most of the integral leaf, two strips of paper reinforcement at top and bottom rear, overall very fine.
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
