Description
Jefferson Davis and His Cabinet: Impressive Print and Autograph Display. 28" x 21" [sight] titled: "Jefferson Davis and His Cabinet With General Lee in the Council Chamber at Richmond". Published in 1897 by Americus Patterson of Gainesville, Texas, copying the 1866 work published in New York by Thomas Kelly. The print shows nine men, all of whom are represented by examples of clipped signatures displayed in "windows" across the bottom. Each window also has a custom caption card with the name and title of the signer. The men include: Stephen R. Mallory, Judah P. Benjamin, Leroy P. Walker, Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, John H. Reagan, Christopher G. Memminger, Alexander H. Stephens and Robert Toombs. The signatures are all fine examples. The print has some light staining along the right side, several lateral tears on either side, plus some touch-up to the blank border area in the lower left corner. It displays very nicely, reflecting the aesthetic sensibility of the owner. The frame was designed by Donald P. Dow and produced by Newcomb Macklin of Chicago.
