DescriptionJ.D. Salinger Autograph Letter Signed "J.D. Salinger", two pages and envelope, 4.5" x 7.25", "The New Yorker" letterhead, Windsor, Vermont, January 23, 1967. This letter and envelope are addressed to a Miss Janice Cinton, in Geneva. It reads in full: "I'm an unreliable and, at best, reluctant letter-writer, but I do thank you for that good and friendly letter to me. How lucky you are to live in Saudi Arabia! I love the Middle East, and have never been there. I love Islamic literature, medicine, mysticism. Have often yearned to lose myself there for a year or two. Do take in as much as you can. Best wishes to you, Janice, and to Rick, and my thanks for that nice letter." Salinger wrote the famous novel, Catcher in the Rye, known for its controversial topics and views on disgruntled youth. Salinger is also an extreme recluse, and has hardly appeared publicly or written since the 1960s. His signature is extremely rare, and an ALS is even more so. He has been known to bring injunctions against publishers and editors who have tried to publish his letters. In popular culture there is even a story that when Nicholas Cage proposed to Patricia Arquette that she gave him a list of seemingly impossible tasks to perform in order to gain her hand; on this was the autograph of Salinger. So all lovelorn suitors take note!
The mention of the Middle East and mysticism is poignant since Salinger is a devout Zen Buddhist and has been a student of several major schools of eastern thought. This example is in very fine condition; usual folds are present. The envelope is in fine condition; some slight staining exists on the left edge and there are several folds; adhesive residue present on left edge and lower right corner; bears two airmail stamps and a postmark.
