James Watt sends word that his son "is much wanted here on Engine business"

James Watt Autograph Letter Signed "J Watt." One page, 5" x 8", Heathfield [Birmingham, England], April 6, 1808. The Scottish engineer and eponym for the watt unit pens this letter to James Davies of Kingston. In part, "I return with this the deed of covenant with Griffiths duly executed. If my son be with you will you be kind enough to tell him that he is much wanted here on Engine business, and will you mind him to bring copies of the maps of Burlingale & Kinnert with him, as well as all the deeds in your hands which are complete or nearly so." Autograph letters signed by Watt, the inventor of the term horsepower, are quite rare. Eight years after writing this one, he retired from his partnership with Matthew Boulton and their famous firm, Boulton & Watt. Watt's son James Jr. took his father's position in the firm in 1800. Toned with smoothed folds and accompanied by an image of Watt.
