    Description

James Polk Partly Printed Document Signed as Governor of Tennessee. One page, 7.75" x 8.5", Nashville, TN, September 22, 1840. Bearing a white wafer seal of the State of Tennessee, affixed with red wax, at left center. Signed by Polk as governor and John S. Young as secretary of state. Document states: "It is hereby certified, That John S. Young, whose name appears in the above certificate, is and was at the time of signing the same Secretary of State in and for said state duly appointed commissioned and sworn and that full faith and credit should be given to his official attestations as such."

Accompanied by a two page legal document containing interesting slavery content, penned on recto and verso, 7.5" x 12.5", signed by John S. Young as Tennessee's Secretary of State, that details an Act of the Tennessee General Assembly regarding Registration Laws of the state (originally passed in 1831; now amended in 1840), with respect to "deeds for the conveyance of land, mortgages, powers of attorney, bills of sale and other constraints Acquired by law." Section 1 makes reference to slaves, categorizing them with other personal property that comes under the jurisdiction of the Act: "all bills of sale for the absolute Conveyance of Slaves or other personal property, all mortgages and deeds of trust of either that or personal property, all deeds of gift, all powers of attorney, authorizing the conveyance of real or personal estate or for any other purpose." Documents are moderately age toned; legal document bears occasional ink burns and a 2.5" tear at lower left of first page; partly-printed document has a rough right edge. Polk's signature is very bold. Accompanied by a steel engraving of Polk measuring 8" x 10.5" in fine condition.
