One partly-printed vellum page, 14.5" x 17", Washington, February 12, 1848. Here, President Polk appoints John B. Butler "Paymaster and Military Storekeeper in the Ordnance Department." Butler, a Connecticut native and major in the U.S. Army, served under General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican War. With patriotic and military vignettes; a blind-embossed War Office seal rests in the upper left margin. Folds.
