    Description

    James Polk Commission Signed "James K. Polk" as president. One page, 15.75" x 11", Washington, June 25, 1846, appointing John B. Butler "an Additional Paymaster in the service of the United States. . . . This commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the President of the United States." Butler, a Connecticut native and major in the U.S. Army, served under General Zachary Taylor during the Mexican War. This document, countersigned by War Secretary William L. Marcy, is toned with folds. With a blind-embossed seal of the War Office in the upper left corner.
