James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed. One page, approximately 7" x 3.5", n.p., May 10, 1790. As a young politician, Monroe joined the anti-Federalists in the Virginia Convention which ratified the Constitution. Seven months after writing this brief letter, Monroe was elected United States Senator. Addressed to Mr. Campbell, the letter discusses actions taken by one Mr. Lovell. In part: "Mr. Lovell has settled my acct against Johnson & therein fix'd the price of tobo [tobacco] & in pt a judgmt be enter'd up for the amount, & whatever discounts can be establish'd within 20 days with Mr. Lovell, or indeed if he can satisfy me of any for wh.[which] he has no vouchers, will be allowed by. . . . Jas. Monroe. "

Immediately prior to the outbreak of Revolutionary War hostilities, Southern planters exported more than one million pounds of tobacco to Britain annually, making tobacco the most important of all colonial exports. Considered an "enumerated" commodity, tobacco received special preferences that translated into great fortunes in the latter seventeenth century and early eighteenth century. Monroe grew up on his family's 500-acre tobacco plantation, which he inherited upon his father death in 1774. As a businessman and as a Virginia politician, Monroe had a strong interest in tobacco prices, as reflected in this brief business letter. Moderately age toned; minor folds. Generally fine condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
