    Description

James McPherson Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Vicksburg [Mississippi], December 17, 1863, on letterhead reading, "Head-Quarters Seventeenth Army Corps, Department of the Tennessee." General McPherson writes this letter to Colonel Embury Osband regarding a possible spy named J. W. Vaughn who might still be "loitering about your post." In full:

    "Col:

    J. W. Vaughn referred to in your Communication is no spy of mine. He came into our lines several days since, purporting to have come from Col: [Edward] Hatch, and told a very plain straightforward Connected [?] story, the information he gave coinciding very well with what I had obtained from other sources. There was no one here however to vouch for him, and a pass was given him to go to Memphis and report to Brig Genl. [Benjamin] Grierson or Hatch. Major Worden[?] knew him Slightly but could not state positively as to his honesty or Loyalty. If he is loitering about your post arrest him and send him to Memphis.

    Very Respectfully
    Your Obt. Servt.
    [signed] James B. McPherson
    Maj. Genl.
    Commdg."

In December 1863, Colonel Embury Osband was serving in Co."A" of the Illinois 4th Cavalry. Two months later he was promoted and commissioned into the 3rd Regiment U.S. Colored Cavalry. He eventually rose to the rank of brevet brigadier general. In July 1864, General James McPherson rode upon a group of Confederate skirmishers. He was shot as he attempted to escape. We were unable to find more information on J. W. Vaughn, the suspected spy. Smoothed folds on toned paper.
