James McNeill Whistler Autograph Letter Signed with a Butterfly. Two pages, 5.75" x 4" (sight), Chelsea [London]; no date. Addressed to his publisher, it reads in full: "You are clearly having a good time of it! I can only regret that I may not go with you to Burnside. Meanwhile say many things of course from me to our friend Harry – and when you come back come & tell us of your travels. The pictures are going to Munich all right – I have heard from Dr. Herr Paulus Your edition of the Kipling is very pretty – do send us some more novels. I will send William for whatever you may think we would delight in." He signed his letter with a drawing of a butterfly. It is matted, framed, and double-glazed with a print of Whistler and a typed transcription of the letter to an overall size of 11.25" x 18.25".

James Whistler began developing his butterfly signature - based on his initials -- in the 1860s during a period when he was interested in Asian art. The shape of the butterfly evolved over his lifetime as he applied the design to correspondence and paintings.

Condition: Lightly toned and rubbed with smoothed folds and paper clip indentation. Frame is scratched and chipped in places.
