James Madison Signed Naval Appointment. Single vellum sheet, 12.75" x 16.25"; Washington; March 6, 1813. A partly printed document appointing Lawrence Kearney [sic] to the rank of "Lieutenant in the Navy." Countersigned by William Jones as Secretary of the Navy. A docket at bottom left reads: "This commission is granted in lieu of the original one alleged to have been lost with the Schooner Ferrett. Registered e. W. Duval March 16, 1814." With blind embossed naval seat at bottom center.

Lawrence Kearny (1789-1868) was lieutenant commander of the schooner Ferret when it sank off the shores of Folly Island in South Carolina in February 1814. Kearny would later rise to the rank of commodore and played a crucial role in establishing trade with China in the 1840s.

Condition: Document has been tightly trimmed affecting the engravings at top and bottom. Madison's signature has faded, and is a bit spotty but remains legible. Engrossment and Jones' signature are bold.
