    Description

    James Madison Scalloped-Top Sea Passport Signed and countersigned by Secretary of State Robert Smith. One partially-printed vellum page, approx. 10" x 15.5", March 18, 1812. The passport allows the "Ship Science, Charles Coggeshall master or commander, of the burthen of Three hundred forty-five of 37/95 tons or thereabouts mounted with no guns navigated with fourteen men to pass with her Company, Passengers Goods and merchandise without any hinderance, seizure or molestation." Numbered "5" with blind embossed paper seal in lower left corner. Smoothed folds and slight fading although Madison's signature remains bold. Matted and framed with photograph to an overall size of 27.25" x 25".
