    Description

James Madison Letter of Marque Signed. One partially printed page, 15.75" x 12.75", Washington, December 2, 1813, authorizing the "...private armed Brig called the Argus of the burthen of Two hundred & Seventy four tons, or thereabouts, owned by Joseph N. Howe & John Brazer of Boston...and Benjamin Pierce of Newbury...mounting Twelve carriage guns, and navigated by Forty two men..." to sail as a commissioned privateer to "...subdue, seize and take any armed or unarmed British vessel, public or private, which shall be found within the jurisdictional limits of the United States or elsewhere on the high seas, or within the waters of the British dominions..."Countersigned by James Monroe as secretary of state. Original paper seal of the United States at lower left. Folds are weakened and separating in places, especially at the upper edge, with some loss of paper and text. Light water damage has cause some staining and fading of the text in places. Signatures of both Madison and Monroe are bold and still bright.

During the War of 1812, the United States lacked a standing navy. To remedy this quickly, the government issued letters of marque and reprisal which authorized private ships to attack and seize British ships and their cargo.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
