Description
James Madison Autograph Letter Signed "James Madison." One page, 8" x 9.75"; January 12, 1820. In a letter to an unnamed correspondent, possibly James Breckinridge (1763-1833), former president Madison writes about clover seed, which he discussed in previous letters with Breckinridge, a Virginian lawyer and politician. "Having heard nothing of Gordon or the Clover Seed, and an opportunity offering, I have guarded [up at?] the uncertainty by supplying myself with as much as will be essential. I shall of course not wish to extend my want from you beyond ten bushels, and would prefer declining that much, if my doing so should be no disappointment to you. Whatever quantity may yet be brought by London, I shall consider as within my arrangement, and shall endeavor to dispose of the surplus to some of my neighbors. Be so good as to drop me a line without delay, that I may fulfil my promise if necessary, before you leave Richmond."Condition: Letter has usual folds, slight toning, a small pinhole at top left corner, verso of left corner shows residue of paper on which the letter was formally attached; otherwise good.
