Madison writes on the value of education for the "rising generation"

James Madison Autograph Letter Signed With Integral Address Cover in His Hand. One page, 7.75" x 9.75". Montpelier; February 14, 1828. A letter to New York Congressman Gulian C. Verplanck letting him know that he has received the "Report to the High School Society of N. York", and thanking him for said copy. Madison writes: "No feature in the aspect of our country is more gratifying than the increase and variety of Institutions for educating the several ages & classes of the rising generation, and the meritorious patriotism which improving on the most improved forms extends the benefits to the sex heretofore sharing too little of it. Considered as at once the fruits of our free system of Government, & the true means of sustaining and recommending it, such establishments are entitled to the best praise that can be offered; and I congratulate you Sir, on the exemplary success of the benevolent and comprehensive one, in the patronage of which you are so prominent an associate... James Madison."

Verplanck served as congressman from New York's Third District from 1825 to 1833. In addition to being a powerful member of the House Ways and Means Committee, he devoted much of his political influence to matters of education in New York City. In keeping with his views on the importance of education, he was also a regular contributor to literary publications and one of the organizers of the American Academy of Fine Arts.

The integral address cover is addressed in Madison's hand, and is franked in an unknown hand.

Condition: Gently toned, with flattened folds. Small bit of paper loss on integral address sheet where wax seal has been torn open. Does not affect any text. Previous dealer's markings in pencil in upper left corner have been erased, but traces remain. Light creasing throughout at folds.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
