James Madison Autograph Letter Signed as President during the War of 1812. One page with integral blank, 7.75" x 9.75". Washington, D.C.; April 14, 1813. A letter to Anthony Morris concerning a commissary appointment to Bermuda: "To the Depôt where provisions of war are to be provided for & exchanged, is the Island of Bermuda, for which a Commissary is about to be appointed. His allowance is not fixed on, but will not be less than the rate of $2000 per annum. A cartel in which he will have passage will be dispatched in about ten days, and will probably proceed from the Delaware. If this charge should coincide with your regard to health & other circumstances, it will with pleasure be committed to you..." An interesting letter in which Madison, as commander in Chief, offers a close family friend a position.

Written during the war with Great Britain, President Madison offers the post of Commissary to Bermuda to Anthony Morris (1766-1860), a close friend of Dolly Madison from their youth in Philadelphia. Morris was a lawyer, a Federalist politician, and a devout Quaker from Philadelphia. It is not clear that Morris accepted Madison's offer, though he did serve the president as ambassador to the Court of Spain from 1813 to 1815, where he laid the groundwork for the ceding of Florida to the United States.

Condition: The letter has horizontal and vertical folds, with tape repairs made to the separations on verso. Folds on integral pages have bids of paper loss at folds, and a large chip at top. Light toning and mat burn. Docketed on verso. The letter is accompanied by an engraving of Madison.
