    James K. Polk Military Appointment Signed "James K Polk". One partially printed vellum page, 15.5" x 19.25", Washington D. C.; July 20, 1848. The document reads in part: "confer on Brevet Captain William Hays...the rank of Major by Brevet...'For gallant and meritorious conduct in the battle of Chapultepec'..." Countersigned by W.L. Marcy as Secretary of War, with handsome engraved military and patriotic vignettes at the top and bottom margins. The embossed paper seal is missing from the upper left. Docketing at the top left corner.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with light uneven toning throughout. Creasing and a few small tears at the corners. As mentioned, the paper seal is missing. Bold signature by Polk.
