James K. Polk Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page with integral blank, 8" x 10"; September 11, 1846. Writing to Secretary of the Navy John Y. Mason: "Will you do me the favour to call at 9 o'clock this morning? I desire to see the Cabinet at that hour." Signed, "James K. Polk."

A scarce and important letter, hand-delivered at an early hour calling for cabinet meeting. No indication is present regarding the urgency for a meeting, but at the time, General Zachary Taylor was moving his forces toward Monterey Mexico. Taylor's forces attacked on September 20, 1846; and the Mexican forces surrendered four days later.

Condition: Flattened folds, with ghosting of the text at bottom. Light soiling on verso of blank integral. Bold ink on bright paper.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
