James K. Polk Autograph Endorsement Signed as president. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 12.5", Washington City, July 17, 1846. One year into his only term as president, James Polk pens this unusual endorsement for an optician: "Mr. Siga has furnished me with a pair of spectacles which I think superior to any I have ever used. At Mr. Siga's request I make this statement." The paper is darkly toned; pages two and three are silked. Mounting remnants exist on page four. Minor stains.

Above Polk's endorsement, U.S. Senator Thomas J. Rusk of Texas wrote a similar testimony on July 6, 1846, for Mr. Siga, who supplied him with "a pair of glasses the best I have ever seen." (Rusk was instrumental in the annexation of Texas and served as president of the commission which drew up the state's constitution.) Below Polk's endorsement are over twenty other signatures endorsing Siga, including G. M. Dallas, Polk's vice president; William R. King, the future vice president of President Pierce; John J. Crittenden; Benjamin Fitzpatrick; Charles L. Livingston; and Augustus B. Longstreet, the author of Georgia Scenes (1835), Georgia's first important literary work.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
