    Description

James Garfield Document Signed "James A. Garfield" as president. One partially printed page of an 8" x 10" bifolium, blue paper, Washington, June 10, 1881. It reads, in full:

"I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the envelope of my letter in reply to a letter of H.M. the King of the Belgians, announcing the marriage of the Princess Stephanie to Prince Rudolphe of Austria- dated this day, and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant."

Leopold II of Belgium, the country's second King, reigned from 1865 to 1909. His sixteen year-old daughter, Princess Stéphanie of Belgium, became Crown Princess of Austria when she married the Habsburg heir-apparent, Archduke Rudolf, just a month before the date of this document. The marriage ended in 1889 when Rudolf and his mistress were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide pact.

Condition: Lightly toned along the edges, two flattened horizontal folds.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
