James Fannin Autograph Document Signed in 1836

James Fannin Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7" x 5.5", Copano, Texas, February 3, 1836, addressed to "The Treasurer of the Provl. Govt of Texas / San Felipe / or any other Public Disbursing Officer of Texas." Fannin writes, "446 Doll[ars] / At eight please[?] pay to H[enry]. Folley on order Four hundred & forty six dollars for value rcd. of him for provisions & for volunteer army[?] and charge the same, as for advice and oblige yr. obt servt. J. W. Fannin Jr." Additional endorsements on the verso. Toned with a chip along left edge.

West Point graduate James Fannin Jr. was elected colonel of the Provisional Regiment of Volunteers at Goliad four days after asking for this disbursement. Soon, he learned that the Mexicans were occupying Matamoros, about 200 miles southeast of Copano, and he fell back to strengthen defenses at Goliad, fifty miles north of Copano. On March 19, Fannin began a retreat which had been ordered by General Sam Houston, but he and his men were surrounded and forced to surrender at the Battle of Coleto. The Texans were imprisoned by the Mexicans at Goliad where they were executed by order of Antonio López de Santa Anna on March 27, 1836. The fall of the Alamo and the Goliad Massacre of 342 Texans aroused the fury of the people of Texas, the United States, and even Great Britain and France, thus considerably promoting the success of the Texas Revolution.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
