James Buchanan signed whaling papers, issued during Abraham Lincoln's presidency

James Buchanan Signed Four Languages Ship's Whaling Papers. A single sheet, 21.75" x 16.75"; June 19, 1861. A partly printed document issued to Thomas Morrison, master or commander of the ship Mary "lying at present in the port of Edgartown bound for the Indian Ocean and laden with Provisions, Casks, Ship Stores, Whaling Utensils and articles necessary to carry on a voyage in the whale fishery." Countersigned by Lewis Cass, who served as his Secretary of State from 1857 through 1860.

It was customary for these documents to be signed in advance by the president and secretary of state and then forwarded to the various ports for issuance as needed. This particular passport was likely signed in 1860, but was issued during Abraham Lincoln's term in office. The outbreak of the Civil War likely caused a delay in the distribution of updated passports.

Condition: With flattened folds with some wear and bits of paper loss occurring along same; most notably affecting the "B" in Buchanan's signature. Light and uneven toning, with a few stray stains.
