Description

James Buchanan Letter Signed as Secretary of State "James Buchanan". One page, 8" x 10", Washington, June 9, 1846, to General Robert Armstrong, American Consul in Liverpool, England. The future President signs a letter of introduction for Mr. James G. Bennett, travelling under a courier's passport with his wife to Liverpool. The letter has the usual fold creases, but is otherwise bright and legible with a bold Buchanan signature. Fine condition.

    More Information:

It reads, in part: "During their stay in Liverpool, may I bespeak for them your kind attentions. It will gratify me to learn that you have afforded them every facility which you so well know how to bestow. I refer you to Mr. Bennett for the news. He is as capable of giving it to you as any gentleman within my knowledge. From your friend, very respectfully, James Buchanan." James Gordon Smith was the founder of the New York Herald; Robert Armstrong was a distinguished veteran of the War of 1812 and later Postmaster of Nashville, Tennessee.
