    Description

    James Buchanan Four-Language Ship's Papers Signed and countersigned by Secretary of State Lewis Cass. One partly-printed page, 22" x 17", September 13, 1858. The document, printed in French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, authorizes passage for John B. Cornell "master or commander of the Barque called Martha . . . in the port of New Bedford, bound for Pacific Ocean and laden with Provisions, Stores, and utensils for a whaling voyage." One large paper seal is intact along the lower margin. Separation exists along half of the central horizontal fold, with weaknesses along other folds. Some uneven toning.
