James B. McPherson Autograph Endorsement Signed. One page, 17" x 7", n.p., November 19, 1863. Union General McPherson has endorsed a partly-printed "Roll of Prisoners of War captured by Col. E. D. Osband 1st Miss Cav A.D., at . . . [illegible] Landing, Miss." McPherson's endorsement states that the prisoners turned themselves in and "want to go north."

The document lists four Confederate POWs (J. C. Severe, Thomas B. Guiliams, John H. Guiliams, and Milton Thomson - all privates in the 4th Arkansas Infantry) captured on November 16, 1863. According to the document, the prisoners were "Turned over to the Provost Marshal 17th Army Corps." General McPherson writes in full below the list in bold ink:

"The above men delivered themselves up desire to take the oath of Allegiance and go north.

    Rec'd the above named persons
    Nov. 19th 1863
    [signed] J. B. McPherson
    Maj Genl

Four months after writing this endorsement, McPherson was placed in command of the Army of the Tennessee. (Previously, the Army had been commanded by William T. Sherman, who had been promoted commander of all Union armies in the West.) On July 22, 1864, General McPherson accidentally rode upon a group of Confederate skirmishers. He was shot as he turned his horse and attempted to escape. This document has separated along folds into three pieces. McPherson's signature is unaffected, except for the end of the flourish following the last letter of "McPherson." Some separations exist along other folds.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
