James and Dolly Madison Autograph Document Signed "James Madison" [and] "D. P. Madison". One page, 6.25" x 7.75", [Washington, D.C.], June 12, 1824. The document reads, in part:

"We James Madison and Dolly P. Madison have received and promised to hold in trust for the use of Mrs. Anna P[ayne]. Cutts, or in case of her death, any surplus remaining for that of her two daughters or the survivors of them, the sum of twelve hundred dollars consisting of monies furnished by her Sister Lucy P. Todd and others of her kindred & friends, for the said purposes."

The reverse of the document has a five-line memorandum initialed by Madison, beneath which is a similar length memorandum written and signed by Dolly Madison, her signature however, has been canceled with ink. Anna Cutts and her husband Richard were acquaintances the former President and his wife. The Madison's acquired the Cutts home in Washington, D.C. and Dolley lived in it from 1837 until her death and the house is still referred to as the Cutts-Madison.

Condition: A bright, legible document, with a repair to the verso of the signatures (once clipped and then restored?), otherwise excellent.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
