James A. Garfield: ALS and Personally-owned History Book. 4.75" x 7.5" copy of "New School History of the United States of America" by Blackburn and McDonald, Baltimore, William J. C. Dulany & Company, 1880, 529pp., bound in brown cloth. Modern reinforcement of spine, slight tears at hinges, stamped in purple on the front free endpaper and title page "J. A. Garfield Oct. 6 1880". Tipped in on the flyleaf preceding the title page is an Autograph Note Signed "J. A. Garfield Washington, D.C. Dec. 4, 79". It measures 3" x 5.25" and reads, in full: "Will the Commissioner of Pensions be able to tell me from this additional information the condition of my Correspondance claim." On the inside back cover, Garfield has written "391-394 5 7 400" in pencil. Garfield has marked off or highlighted three sections in the book dealing with Lincoln's election in 1860 and the start of the Civil War. It is quite feasible he used this information while composing his 1881 inaugural address. This book is one of several dozen deaccessioned some twenty years ago from Garfield's Lawnfield Library estate.
