Jacqueline Kennedy Autograph Letter Signed "Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis." Three pages, 5.25" x 7.5", no place; no date. Written on personal blue stationery and addressed to Elaine Steinbeck. The former First Lady writes to express her thanks and admiration for John Steinbeck's support following the death of her husband. It reads, in full:

"I have found the letters of your husband. I can never express what they meant to me at the time - they helped me face what was unacceptable to me. On the anniversary of Jack's death - Look Magazine made a memorial edition to him - they asked me to write something - which I didn't want to do because I felt incapable of it - & it was the hardest thing I have ever done - but it was your husband's words that finally undid my paralysis - ' the hero comes when he is needed -...when our belief gets pale and weak' - (then he disappeared). In despair that gave me something to reach at like a buoy - to accept and try to reconcile what had happened. I didn't attribute those words to him to Mr. Steinbeck in that article because I thought it would be an imposition - and also because they were like a litany to me by then & I was saying them over & over to myself - trying to make them help me. You will never know what it meant to me to talk with your husband in those days - I read his letters now - and I am as moved as I was then. All his wisdom his compassion his far-seeing view of things. I cant remember the sort of book we were discussing them, but I am glad it wasn't written. His letters say more than a whole book could. I will treasure them all my life." The letter is accompanied by the original transmittal cover.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, else very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
