DescriptionJacob Broom Land Indenture Signed "Jaco: Broom" as a witness. One vellum page, 17.5" x 13", New Castle [Delaware], October 25, 1779, affirming that "...Susanna Hinton...for and in considerations of the Sum of Two Hundred pounds in specie hath Granted Bargained Sold Aliened Released & Confirmed...unto...William Starr...[a] Messuage or Tennement and ...Lot or peice [sic] of Land..." Countersigned by Hinton's attorney William Beale. Two wax seals at lower right. Light, uneven toning. Damage at lower right resulting in minor damage to text and loss of paper.
Jacob Broom (1752-1810), a pacifist Quaker, was a signer of the United States Constitution during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. While his religious leaning prevented him from participating in combat, he prepared detailed maps for the Delaware region for General Washington. Broom's signature is rare in any form, being one of the rarest of all signers of the Constitution.
