JACK LONDON CHECK. San Francisco was still smoldering from the devastating 1906 earthquake when Jack London executed this check.  He lived in the Bay Area at the time, yet found a need to pay the "Exer-Ketch Novelty Co." $1.10.  The self-proclaimed socialist was then 30 years old - a decade removed from a kidney disorder that claimed his life.  Only close examination reveals that this piece has a small tear located below the check's date.  The cancellation is in the form of a stamp which mildly violates "k" in his first name.  Otherwise, this is a splendid survivor, fully written in his hand with a broad-tipped fountain pen, and the signature is a strong 9 in quality.
