"Yours for the Revolution, Jack London"

Jack London Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 5.25", "Glen Ellen, Calif.", March 1, 1911. Although it is unclear why and to whom London related this story, this brief letter recalls a tumultuous time in the author's life.

In full: "Seventeen years ago, on the streets of Oakland, I was arrested, as a socialist, for street speaking. It is about the proudest event in my life. I was ostracized at the time. Yesterday, the paying teller of an Oakland Bank showed me his red card, & said that eight men in the bank carried red cards. Yours for the Revolution, Jack London." In 1896, while briefly attending UC Berkeley, London grew increasingly aware of social issues and began writing letters to local San Francisco/Bay Area newspapers. In February of the following year, he was arrested for speaking in public without the mayor's permission, but only one juror found him guilty, so the city dropped the case against him. In this brief reminiscence, London discusses this time in his life.

Five months after his arrest, London and his brother sailed to Alaska to join the Klondike Gold Rush, which served as the setting for some of his earliest and most successful stories. Fourteen years later (not 17, as London incorrectly remembers), from his home in Glen Ellen, London recounts this story, which may have whetted his appetite for adventure. Bright and sharp.
