    Description

    J. E. Muddock. Autograph Letter Signed "J. E. Muddock." Kent: November 29, 1893. Addressed to William Colles of the Author's Syndicate. One page, 8" x 10.75", Shortlands, Kent; November 29, 1893. Written on personal stationery and addressed to William Morris Colles Esq., founder of the Author's Syndicate. An irritated Muddock writes to Colles about issues with his contract with George Newnes of The Strand Magazine, and with publishing his work in America. It reads in full: "I have had no opportunity of answering your letter from Dublin before now. I cannot agree with you that I should 'climb down' in so far as Mr. Newnes is concerned. A man should only climb down when he knows he is in the wrong and in this case I leave here very badly treated. Then on the other hand I am sure you are wrong when you say I can not sell the American rights. My agreement with Mr. Newnes was that the story should commence at the beginning of 1893, yet we are now at the end of the year and there is no prospect of a commencement before '95. Therefore I am clearly justified in selling the story in America, having given Mr. Newnes due notice of my intention to do so. I trust therefore you will lose no time in trying to dispose of the American rights of the work irrespective of any date of commencement here. Your attention to this matter will oblige."

James Edward Muddock (1843-1934) was a prolific British journalist and author of mystery and horror fiction. From 1889-1922 he published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories, and works were often used by The Strand Magazine when there were no Sherlock Holmes stories available to publish. For a period, Muddock was nearly as popular as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The letter has mail folds and edge toning. Creasing at the edges and corners. There is a large notation in blue pencil at the top center. Areas of ink transference from the letter being folded. Good.
