Turgenev writes to inquire about the progress of the translation of Fathers and Sons
Ivan Turgenev Autograph Letter Signed "I. Turgeneff". Three pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8", Baden, July 17, 1867. Turgenev is writing to Eugene Schuyler, an American diplomat. Schuyler had met Turgenev earlier in the year and as an avid scholar, and almost immediately the two came to an agreement in which Schuyler would translate Turgenev's novel Fathers and Sons. In the letter offered here, Turgenev is asking Schuyler about the progress on his translation:"Dear Sir, Your letter dated May 24, addressed to the Russian Messenger's Office in Moscow - was very delayed in reaching me here - and I hasten to answer you. I am very curious to see your translation of 'Fathers and Children' - and I hope that copies will be sent to me from Moscow as soon as they get there - I made a trip to Russia during winter and I published my new book there which title is: 'Smoke'; - I am sending you a copy - and please acknowledge receipt of it. I don't know if I told you that I have settled in Baden - that I almost never leave; - letters and packages must be addressed here. If you realize your project to spend a winter in Petersburg - I hope that you would be willing to make a little detour to Baden: I would be truly pleased to be at your disposal and to provide you with all necessary recommendations and introductions to my friends - etc. It is inevitable that a sojourn in Russia would enable you to establish strong relationships with all of our men of letters - and will be extremely profitable for [scratch] your own language knowledge, our morals etc. - I have no doubt that you will be received with most cordiality: you know how much the Americans are popular in Russia and an American involved in our literature and even on larger scales to be welcomed at home."
Fathers and Sons would be the first of Turgenev's works to appear in the United States. Turgenev would later introduce Schuyler to Leo Tolstoy, for whom Schuyler would also translate his works.
Condition: Gently toned with usual mail folds, light soiling on verso.
