Irving Berlin Signs "God Bless America" Sheet Music. Four pages, 9" x 12", Berlin's signature in center of front page. Written by Berlin in 1918 and put in a trunk, "God Bless America" sat for some 20 years and, after several attempts to write a better patriotic song, Berlin asked his secretary to retreive it. He changed a few lines- "through the night" was previously "to the right" as that was too political! "From the mountains to the prairies, to the oceans, white with foam" was originally "from the green fields of Virginia to the gold fields out in Nome" (a definite improvement there!) The powerful voice of Kate Smith delivered the song as her closing number on the Kate Smith Music Hour November 10, 1938, and the rest is history! Very fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
