    William Stewart Halsted Document Signed "W. S. Halsted." Three pages, partially printed, the remainder completed in typescript, 8" x 10.5". The document, titled "Biographical Notes for The Cyclopedia of American Biology", was intended to update Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography and provided a full professional biography of Halsted, including some family information. Halsted signed the document on the last page. Also included is a three page typed chronology of Halsted's career highlights titled "Original Contributions to Surgery". W. S. Halsted (1852-1922) has been called the father of modern surgery. He introduced several new surgical techniques including the radical mastectomy. He was a champion for anesthetics, in fact he himself was addicted to cocaine and morphine.

    Condition: With old smoothed fold creases and some toning to the paper along the edges.
