    Description

Wernher Von Braun Typed Letter Signed "Wernher von Braun". One page, 8" x 10.5", Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; February 23, 1960. Written in German, a letter to Jesco von Puttkamer, who would join Von Braun's Apollo rocket team two years later. It translates to read, in full:

"For your letter of Feb. 3 I would like to thank you very much, as well as for your sympathetic words on my mother's death. It was extraordinary friendly of you and Mr. Ernsting to dedicate to me your book: ' u The Immortal Universe /u '. Unfortunately, I will probably save it for some future peaceful hours. You probably read in the German newspapers about the imminent reorganization of our service and its annexation to NASA. In addition to the current work commitments, the work involved in this work represents a considerable additional burden and, apart from my full day hours, also make use of a very considerable part of my extra hours. However, I wish your book to continue the success that the first edition brought, to you personally a lot of luck for the rest of your graduation team and all the best for a successful future as a rocket engineer. With kind regards." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope.

Puttkamer (1933-2012) at the time was a space engineering student and author of the science fiction book The Immortal Universe, published in 1959. Puttkamer joined von Braun's team in 1962 and worked on the development of the Saturn V rocket, which was responsible for landing the Apollo 11 astronauts on the moon. Puttkamer was also a consultant on the first Star Trek movie.

Condition: Usual mail folds, with three hole punches along left vertical margin. Signed boldly in blue ink, overall very good.
