In this fascinating photograph (9.75" x 8") taken inside the inventor's Menlo Park Laboratory, Edison reads from a piece of paper held in his left hand into a Dictaphone, which is held in his right hand. Behind him are shelves of chemicals. Below the photographer's stamp ("C. C. Langill, Photo, N.Y.") in the lower right corner of the photograph is written "1887." Above the photograph is written in red ink, "Edison, Thomas A." On the verso is written in black ink, "Thomas A. Edison. Taken in his laboratory about 1887 or 1888. Signed." Below this are affixed two columns of a New York Times article (dated February 2, 1921) entitled, "Edison Discusses His Philosophy."
