Samuel F. B. Morse Autograph Letter Signed "Saml F. B. Morse," two pages, 5" x 6.75", front and verso. Harrison Hudson County, N Jersey, September 20, 1866. To his brother, Richard Cary Morse, New Haven, Conn., an ordained Presbyterian minister who, in 1823, joined brother Sidney in founding the New York Observer, where he specialized in editing, writing, and translating French and German contributions. In this letter, Morse writes mostly about family matters, quoting a letter he wrote from Geneva to his brother Sidney. In part, "I have my boys Arthur & Willie very eligibly and pleasantly established at an excellent boarding house with their teacher Col. Leslie...I and Sarah and Lela & Eddie are just now in the same house and as I lift my eyes from my paper Mont Blanc & its glittering train of snow clad the afternoon sun are directly before me..." Arthur was 17-year-old Samuel Arthur Breese Morse, and Willie was 13. Morse's wife was Sarah Griswold Morse and their 15-year-old daughter Cornelia was called Lela. Their youngest was 9-year-old Edward Lind Morse. Morse writes of his grandson Charles Lind, son of his daughter, Susan Morse Lind: "Susan thinks of coming to Paris in the Spring. Charles Lind is well & doing well. He is very ambitious, and determined to make a first-rate painter. I tell him the mantel is going into the Lind branch, especially since little Eddie shows uncommon talent in sketching. He made several hasty sketches as we came up the Rhine, quite good..." Minor marginal tears and light soiling. The lower edge of the page has been torn off, removing one line from the first page. Overall, in fine condition.
