Pennsylvania Oil: Bennyhoof Petroleum Company Archive. Archive consists of more than thirty Autograph Letters Signed, written between the years 1865 - 1869, most composed by Burd. P. Pott, W. T. Beadle, and H. G. Esler, as agents/employees of the company. The letters consist primarily of business correspondence regarding the drilling of wells, well drilling agreements, problems with machinery, financial considerations, reports on oil and gas production, and a wealth of general information about the day-to-day operations of the company.

Also included is an William Kendrick Autograph Letter Signed on "Office of William Kendrick" letterhead, Pottsville, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1872, certifying that "William Kendrick is the President of The Bennyhoof Petroleum Company, and that he goes to the Oil Region with full power from the Directors of this Company to act in all things for them as per resolution of Directors' meeting held this day. Witness the Seal of the Company, and the hand and Seal of the Secretary." A very handsome letter on attractive letterhead which features an embossed seal at lower left.

The Pennsylvania oil boom started in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859, as Edwin L. Drake struck "rock oil." The region was already well known for its active oil seeps. Native Americans had been soaking oil from water with linen cloth and using it as a source for lamp fuel for hundreds of years. European settlers often found the oil by accident when drilling wells for drinking water.

Dozens of wells were drilled and towns sprang up literally overnight. Other oil-related businesses quickly exploded on the scene. Eight refineries were built between 1862 and 1868. Drilling tools were needed and several iron works were built. Titusville grew from 250 residents to 10,000 almost overnight and in 1866 it was incorporated as a city.
