Orville Wright Typed Letter Signed. One page, 7.25" x 10.5", Dayton, Ohio, January 14, 1941, on Orville Wright's personal letterhead, thanking author John Walter Wood of New York, New York, for "the autographed copy of your book 'Airports' [Airports: Some Elements of Design and Future Development (1940)]. So far I have been able to glance through it only hurriedly, but that hurried examination brought to my attention a lot of things I had not before thought of in the laying out of an airport. I feel sure your book will be of great use." Wright also thanked Wood for "the copy of 'Bird Flight', which came to my office last summer while I was in Canada. I believe Miss Beck acknowledged receipt of it. It looks interesting and I shall read it through as soon as I have the opportunity."

Accompanying Wright's letter is Mabel Beck's letter (referred to above) written to Mr. Wood on July 22, 1940, acknowledging "with thanks the receipt of Mr. [Gordon] Aymar's book, 'Bird Flight'." This letter is also typed on Orville Wright's personal letterhead and is signed "Mabel Beck/ Secretary". The invaluable (and formidable) Mabel Beck served for years as Orville's secretary, organizing his files, typing his letters, and guarding against numerous unwanted visitors. John Wood first met Orville Wright in 1935. Over the next twelve years, the two met on several occasions and corresponded about Wood's aeronautical writing projects. Following the publication of Airports in 1940, Wood served as an airport analyst with the Port of New York Authority from 1943-1944; later in 1945, he served with the Airport Development Branch, U.S. Air Force, in Washington, D.C. Both letters have smoothed folds and two filing holes along the top margin. Fine condition.
