    Jean-Albert Euler. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Jean-Albert Euler." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, 7.25" x 8.75", St. Petersburg; October 27, 1778. In this letter to the French mathematician, Abbe Charles Bossut (1730-1814), Euler informs Bossut that he has been accepted as an External Associate of the Imperial Academy of Sciences as a sign of the Academy's deep admiration for Bossut's work and of its respect for him as a man of science. He is delighted to be the bearer of the good news, congratulates Bossut, and declares his joy that they have become fellow Academy members. He will give the certificate to Bossut's liaison in St. Petersburg, Monsieur le Chevalier de Corberon, the French diplomat at the Court of Catherine the Great.

Johann Albrecht Euler (1734-1800) was a Swiss-Russian astronomer and mathematician. Also known as Johann Albert Euler or John-Albert Euler, he was the first child born to the great Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler (1707-1783). In 1765, he was appointed as the chair of physics at the St. Petersburg Academy.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds; several small pinholes along left-hand edge of letter, not affecting text; very slight toning along edges; otherwise good.
