    J. Robert Oppenheimer Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 11", on The Institute for Advanced Study letterhead, Princeton, New Jersey, April 4, 1950. Addressed to Edwin H. Land (1909-1991), and American scientist and inventor who co-founded Polaroid Company, regarding a return to a board position, in full: "At the request of the Executive Committee of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College, I am writing to you to enquire whether you would be willing again to serve on the Committee to Visit the Department of Physics. May I express my personal hope that you will be willing to serve. Our task does not seem difficult to me, but it does not seem to me without importance."

Oppenheimer (1904-1967) is often referred as "the father of the atomic bomb" for his instrumental role in the Manhattan Project during World War II, the project that created the first nuclear weapons. Following the Second Word War, he returned to teaching at Caltech, but two years later, in 1947, he accepted a position as director of the Institute for Advance Study.

Condition: Three binding holes at the left edge. Smoothed folds; small staple holes in the upper left corner. Upper edge is toned.
