    J. Robert Oppenheimer Autograph Letter Signed To His Cousin Regarding His Cancer Diagnosis. Written Five Months Before His Death. One page, 8.5" x 11", Pull Point, St. Croix, August 24, 1966, to Alfred Stern, Berkeley, California, with the original transmittal envelope. Oppenheimer writes his cousin, Alfred Stern, and documents his cancer in significant detail, as only a scientist would. The letter reads in full:

"Dear Alfred, Thank you for your very dear note of August 11, that finally caught up with us on St. John. There should be little mystery about my health. Last February we found that I had a cancer near the left tonsillar post, with one small but obvious metastasis to a node in the neck. The primary lesion was treated with about 6000 R of Co60 ; I had a radical neck dissection to discourage further metastasis, & radon needles in the lesion. About six weeks ago the doctor found at last no further obvious signs of malignancy; & we have spent about a month in these islands. We return tomorrow. If the doctor says so, I'll come to some physics meetings in Berkeley in early September, & will call you. Til then all affection to Hedwig & the children & you both. Robert".

This poignant letter is accompanied by a one-page typed letter to Alfred Stern on The Institute for Advanced Study letterhead, signed by Oppenheimer's secretary, Mrs. Charles H. Shaner, acknowledging receipt of Stern's letter of August 11, and letting him know she's forwarding it to Oppenheimer. This historic letter is in fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
