    Description

    J. Robert Oppenheimer Autograph Letter Signed Commenting on the End of the War in Europe "It is twelve years too late...". One page on Manhattan Project "P.O. Box 1663, Santa Fe, N.M." letterhead, 8.5" x 11", Santa Fe [Los Alamos], New Mexico, May 8, [1945] VE Day, to Hedwig Stern, Oppenheimer's aunt, [Berkeley, California]. Oppenheimer had helped his aunt Hedwig Stern and her family escape Nazi Germany in 1937, so the Allied victory in Europe was especially bittersweet for their family. Barely three months later Oppenheimer's atomic bomb would be used to end the war in the Pacific. The letter reads is full:

"Hedwig dear, Endlich. [German for "finally"] It is true that the most terrible and menacing problems remain. But VE is not nothing. It is twelve years late, but not nothing. Our love to you all, & every good wish. Our thoughts are with you at this time. Robert".

A deeply personal letter to his aunt, encompassing many important historical events in Oppenheimer's personal and professional life. With the usual fold creases, else a bold, bright letter in fine condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
