Gregor Mendel Document Signed "Gregor Mendel". One page, 8.25" x 13.25" (sight), St. Thomas' Abbey, Brno; circa September 1876. Written in German, the document concerns a financial transaction issued by St. Thomas' Abbey, for the sum of 63 gulden. With an official embossed red wax seal affixed at the lower left. There are also two revenue stamps at the top left. The document is framed along with a portrait of Mendel, a plaque, and an image of pea plants to the overall size of 26" x 28.

Johan Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) entered St. Thomas' Abbey in his early 20s as a way to attain an education, as he could not afford to put himself through school. He briefly pursued a teaching career and taught physics before becoming abbot of the monastery in 1867. After his death in 1884, Mendel was posthumously attributed as the founder of the modern science of genetics. His experiments with pea plants conducted from 1856-1863 established the rules of heredity, i.e. "The Laws of Mendelian Inheritance". A large majority of Mendel's papers were unfortunately lost when they were burned during the cleaning of his workspace.

Condition: Light foxing throughout, with flattened folds. There is minor creasing around the seal and stamps. Else good.
