    Elias Howe Jr. Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 11.25", n. p., May 3, 1859. Howe, best remembered today as the inventor of the sewing machine, signed this document in recognition of a debt owned Howe by John W. Cochran "in the sum of Two thousand seven hundred forty one & 34/00 dollars" and an assignment of "a certain improvement in Fire Arms and Cannon, for which improvements he the said Cochran has applied to the Governments of the United States and Great Britain for Letters Patent." Countersigned by W. H. Plummer as witness. Folds with toned edges and one small .25" tear at the lower edge.
