    Description

    Eli Whitney Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 9.75", New Haven; May 4, 1818. Writing to the second auditor of the Treasury Department, William Lee, Whitney writes: "Sir: I have this day received your favor of the 28th ult and also from the treasurer of the U. States a remittance of six thousand dollars or on acct of my contract for manufacturing arms and am / Respectfully your very obedient servant Eli Whitney". Whitney turned to manufacturing firearms after being denied a renewal for the patent for his cotton gin. Uneven toning, darker at folds. Separations along the folds have been repaired on verso with tape.
