Charles Darwin Letter Signed "Ch. Darwin." One page, 4.75" x 7.5" (sight), Beckenham, Kent; February 19, 1873. Writing to an unidentified recipient [James Shaw], Darwin expresses his thanks for a photograph he received. The letter reads in full: "Many thanks for the excellent photo. The whole group with the pretty children is quite charming." Matted and frame with a black and white photograph of an elderly Darwin to the overall size of 16" x 13".

From an entry in Shaw's autobiography, we are led to believe that the photograph referenced by Darwin was of a donkey. Shaw had included it and remarked that Darwin had not mentioned the long-eared donkey in his Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals*.

*James Shaw. A Country Schoolmaster. Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd, 1899.

Condition: Flattened mail folds to the letter. There is faint foxing. Boldly signed by Darwin.
