Charles Babbage Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 3" x 4.5", 1 Dorest St, [London]; February 17, 1856. This brief letter to an unnamed recipient reads in full: "I enclose a proof of the pamphlet. Will you have the kindness to return it to me by post with any improvement you may suggest." Signed, "C Babbage."

Charles Babbage (1791-1871) was an English mathematician, scientist and inventor who is credited with conceptualizing the underlying principles for modern day digital computers. In 1812 he was instrumental in the founding of the Analytical Society whose mission was to further the development of mathematics in England by introducing concepts from the European continent. He also assisted in the founding of the Royal Astronomical and Statistical societies. In the 1820s and 30s he dedicated himself to the development of the Difference and Analytical Engines, but they remained unfinished at the time of his death. They were built, successfully, to Babbage's specifications more than a century later.

Condition: Letter has been pasted to small backing board. Small, light patch of discoloration underneath signature that does not affect text.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
