Albert Einstein Unsigned Handwritten Calculations. Two pages, 7.75" x 10.75", no place; no date. One full page of equations, with a small paragraph of writing in Einstein's hand, in German, on verso. The calculations are accompanied by a photocopy of a letter from C. Lanczos of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies to Arnold L. Bishop, dated August 31, 1966, which provides some context for the calculations. Arnold Bishop was the husband of artist Marjorie Bishop, who vacationed with Einstein in one of her friend's summer homes. Lanczos' letter reads, in part:

"...In 1941 Einstein was working on the so-called 'unified field theory', in which he attempted to explain gravitation and electricity from a common basis, by a certain generalization of the previously employed Riemannian geometry, on which his previous theory (of 1916) was based. In Riemann's geometry the fundamental quantity is a certain symmetric tensor, called the 'metrical tensor', which, if given, contains the entire laws of geometry. Einstein thought that for the purpose of electro-magnetism we have to abandon the symmetry of this tensor and operate with a generally non-symmetric field. The 'doodling' he has done on this sheet seems to me a reconstruction of certain formulae, which he could have found easily in his regular notes, which, however, were obviously not available to him during his vacation. Of course, in retrospect it is now difficult to tell, what particular problem he had in mind, when he wrote down these formulae, which are of a very general nature, not sufficient in themselves to be vested with any specific physical meaning..."

Condition: Flattened folds, with light uneven soiling and toning. Rust residue at the edge from a removed paper clip. Tape residue at the top and bottom edges, as well as at the corners.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
